Do I Live Fashion?

Carmen Chan is a jewelry designer based in Hong Kong, her adage being “where sophistication meets over-the-top creativity”. She creates beautifully adorned jewelry, encompassing intrepid individuality not only in panache, but also in distinct personality. As one of the masterminds – and not to mention, one of the fashion icons of Hong Kong – behind #ILiveFashion, Carmen Chan explains to us more about her collaborations and events.

RAW: Tell us a bit more about your #ILiveFashion collaborations and what you are trying to achieve.
Carmen Chan: #ILiveFashion is a project to team up with emerging fashion and creative talents in Hong Kong including designers, bloggers, photographers, stylists, hair stylists, artists, boutiques, galleries and etc. We aim to inspire, enlighten, and inspirit people to create their own reality and definition of self via fashion, swimming against the tide of mainstream fashion and norm sense of beauty.
RAW: What does “I Live Fashion” mean to you?
CC: “I Live Fashion” basically means living fashion in your own term, in your own reality. And “I” should be the one who decides my own self-existence, my own sense of beauty, and my own reality, via fashion.

RAW:  What is one quote that has inspired you, or your fashion?
CC: “Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.” by Dr Seuss.
RAW: How did this idea of ILIVEFASHION come about?
CC: Over the past half year, being an independent jewelry designer makes me connect to different fashion talents in this creative industry. It also makes me understand how hard to stand alone as an independent designer. So, at one point, I had an urge to team up these creative people and kind of form a fashion movement to voice for non-mainstream fashion.

RAW: What are some of the highlights being part of this movement?
CC: It’s always nice to work with different people in this creative industry. The best part is that it becomes one occasion to gather all these people going along with same vision but different perspectives.
RAW: How does it feel to be the “leader”?
CC: I treat myself more as a team member who takes up major role. The project won’t be successful without the team’s support including fashion bloggers like Grace Chan, Jasmine Smith, Elle Lee, Ruby Gloom, Cindy Ko, brand founders of TwS, Adarga, Glush, Void Watches, Irregular Choice, photographer Akif Hakan Celebi and a lot of great partners including Salon Nova, Viss, Roo, square street, OIC Concept, Veuve Clicquot, Quenchooce and countless people in the process.

RAW: What are the highs and lows of leading such large events?
CC: The highs are collaborating with creative people and talents and gaining new perspective and inspiration. The lows are managing small details, as small as getting enough napkin for the party!
RAW: What is your ideal #ILIVEFASHION?
CC: I hope #ILiveFashion can be ongoing to attract more new talents to join the team and inspire more people to live fashion in their own term and reality.
